Listening to children with communication support needs is a resource pack published as the result of an 18-month project by Sense Scotland in association with the CALL Centre, and funded by the Scottish Executive Education Department. The pack consists of two books:
Book 1: Are we listening? (Stuart Aitken & Sally Millar)
Book 2: A rough guide to listening (Sally Millar & Stuart Aitken)
Topics addressed include:
- Terminology and situations in which to consult;
- Checking out interpretations;
- Realistic expectations for listening and consulting;
- Asking the right questions, interpreting answers the right way;
- Framework giving guidance on: matching communication with consulting;
- Short information sheets on topics like
- ‘Indicating ‘Yes/No’;
- ‘Asking Questions’;
- Directory of resources relating to communication impairment; Illustrative case studies.
For: those interested in listening to and consulting with children who have communication support needs eg: social workers / assistants; teachers and support staff; care workers; speech and language therapists; anyone with an interest in finding out what is important to a child or children.
Due to high demand the pack is already in its second print run.
The Scottish Executive Education Department has funded the team to carry out further work, to begin in June 2002 for around 2 years. This work will be to hold development sessions across Scotland. A third book in the series is due to be published later on in 2004.
