The law and social and educational policy stress the importance of finding out what children think about services and involving them in decisions that affect them. But a gap remains between the children’s entitlement and day-to-day practice. Children and young people with severe communication disabilities are commonly not consulted about their preferences, interests, choices and views.
This new pack, funded by the Scottish Executive Education Department, includes practical materials for anyone who wants to listen to and find out the views of children who have communication disabilities.
Teachers, therapists, social workers and care workers in local authorities, health boards, voluntary organisations and other agencies will find the book and accompanying CD a valuable resource to use in their practice. Policy makers and managers in education, health and social work services will find guidance on how to embed involvement, participation and consultation in everyday practice across services.
