The Beastly Story/Symbol Pack 3 is a new set of 3 books that CALL Centre thinks will be motivating and fun for children with speech, language and communication difficulties. The books are suitable for children of more or less any age. The books have a limited amount of text, and a clear, repetitive line running through them, with some recurring vocabulary. Only people with strong stomachs will like these amusing but fairly disgusting tales...
CALL has added picture/symbol materials to make it easier for children to understand and participate in the stories. Most of the symbols used are PCS or adapted PCS (© Mayer-Johnson Co.) but in one or two cases PCS symbols are supplemented by other graphic images. Symbol story boards and BIGmack Tops are meant to be laminated or covered with clear sticky-back plastic. The 8-location symbol story boards can be used on their own or as overlays for a side or top loading TechTalk (please state which is required when ordering). The full pack consists of:
- A paper symbol chart, called Choose a Story, allowing the child to select their preferred story book
- Three story books
- Three colour paper symbol topic charts or ‘story boards’, one for each book. These have been designed to fit a TechTalk communication aid, but can be used with other devices, or as a simple chart
- BIGmack Tops - for sticking on to the top of a BIGmack - for each story there is a page of 2 sets of 3 pictures
- A written guide to ways of using the materials with children
A CD with a Boardmaker and PDF versions of the files comes with the Story Pack.
