3DTV guide
Mencap and Learning Difficulties Media have produced a beautiful and dynamic new resource to help enhance the pleasures that people with profound and multiple learning disabilities get from watching TV. 3DTV is a new approach to watching TV, shifting it from being a passive, silent and often solitary experience, to one which is interactive, multi-sensory and sociable. And much more fun.
The glossy 3DTV guide is packed with ideas for making programmes come alive, so that people don't just watch telly but experience it. The suggestions include many which are equally relevant for people who have sensory disabilities.
The website (http://www.ldmedia.org.uk/3DTV.html) has this to say about 3DTV:
3DTV is a way of making telly viewing lively, and because it can involve many of our senses (like touch and smell) it's especially good for people with high support needs. It's 3D because it goes beyond the TV screen and helps people experience programmes in a very physical way, by:
* Joining in at home with whatever's going on in the programme * Using TV programmes for ideas of activities before and after programmes
One of the best, and certainly jolliest examples of people joining in is actually in a cinema: the Sing-a-long-a Sound of Music event. People join in the songs, and even come dressed in the same sorts of clothes from the film - from nuns to goats! But there's no need to leave the comfort of your home to enjoy this sort of active fun.
The 3DTV guide, which is free, can be ordered from Mencap: publications@mencap.org.uk or 020 7696 6900 or it can be downloaded from the Learning Difficulties Media website: www.ldmedia.org.uk/reports/3dtv.pdf
