27th October, 2006
10:00 – 15:30
Venue: The CALL Centre
This (free) workshop will bring together staff and others who are using or who wish to use Smart Wheelchairs, to share and develop practical ideas for using the systems to develop children's opportunities for communication, play and learning. The CALL Centre has been working with powered mobility aids for many years and Smart Wheelchairs are now manufactured by Smile Rehab Ltd. in England, with approximately 60 systems in use in the UK, in schools, centres and homes. We hope the day will be useful to teaching staff, speech, occupational and physio- therapists, and rehabilitation engineers.
By participating in the day we hope that you will:
- Learn more about the importance of early mobility, including powered mobility, for child development and education
- Improve your knowledge about the Smart Wheelchair and it’s various systems and tools
- See some new Smart Tools and others in development: digitised speech feedback; sonar obstacle sensors; ‘buffer’ detector for tracks; analogue joysticks; new bodyshell; and maybe the ‘Smart Platform’
- Discuss and address common practical and technical issues
- Have a better understanding about who might benefit from using a Smart Wheelchair, and why
- Explore approaches to assessment, planning programmes of work, and evaluating the use of Smart Wheelchairs
We are inviting a wide range of people to participate and so please do tell any colleagues or parents who might be interested in the day to contact us and register if they would like to come.
