    Equal Opportunities Committee Disability Inquiry - Consultation

    Two meetings will be held at the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh to hear about the barriers facing young disabled people in accessing work, using further and higher education and taking part in leisure activities.

    Removing Barriers and Creating Opportunities

    Introduction 2003 was European Year of Disabled People. At the end of 2003 the Equal Opportunities Committee of the Scottish Parliament decided it would hold an inquiry into disability. This means it would look at things which affect disabled people’s lives. It asked people and organisations to give them information on this.

    The Equal Opportunities Committee looked at and talked about all the information it received. They decided that they would ask for more information about things that stop disabled people taking part in 3 important parts of life. These are

    • Being able to work;
    • using further and higher education; and
    • having a social life

    The Committee also wanted to know how things might be better for disabled people. They wanted to hear ideas from lots of people and organisations that work with disabled people. They want to hear what people think and how things could be better.

    The committee also realised that there are other things that affect disabled people getting jobs, going on to study after school and having a social life. These are:

    • speaking up for yourself or someone speaking for you
    • access to information
    • making services more suitable for disabled people
    • attitudes to disabled people

    They want to know more about people’s experiences and views of these things as well.

    Programme of Visits The committee wants to visit different parts of Scotland to hear from more disabled people. During their visits they want to hear more about what stops disabled people getting a job or studying after school or having a social life.
